Aviva Stadium Home to Ireland's Rugby & Socccer Teams
Rugby in Ireland
Rugby matches start again in the Autumn 2016 and are played until the middle of Spring 2017. Ireland plays host to many games and Dublin’s Aviva Stadium will welcome many International teams such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, France and England.
It is an extremely popular sport in Ireland after of course hurling and Gaelic football.
There is one National team, governing body (IRFU) and league for both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
The IRFU is located on Lansdowne road, only a short walk from the Sandymount Hotel and the Aviva Stadium which can be seen from outside the hotel is the main playing grounds for match days.
Ireland also has four provincial rugby teams; Leinster, Munster, Connaught and Ulster. Both Leinster and Munster have been crowned champions of Europe on five occasions.
Local and schools rugby is also very big in Ireland and exceptional players on these teams will proceed to the Irish provinces and National team.
Ireland’s National team has won the Six Nations Grand Slam three times. The team has yet to win the World Cup but here at the Sandymount Hotel we have the greatest amount of hope that they will some day!
International matches are played in Aviva Stadium and provincial matches in Dublin are played in the RDS, which is located in Ballsbridge just a 10 minute walk from the Sandymount Hotel.
