A New Year Message from The Loughran Family
Dear Guests and Friends,
From humble beginnings in 1955 we have met competition from large corporate hotel chains and faced many recessions to proudly survive as Dublin’s oldest family run hotel.
While Sandymount Hotel did not experience the “staycation” uplift of country hotels, nonetheless we did see some increase in business levels during 2021. As the closest hotel to AVIVA Stadium, although numbers were limited due to Government restrictions, there was a great atmosphere, which was certainly helped by Ireland’s dramatic victory over the All Blacks.
One of our greatest challenges is to protect our wonderful employees. Unpredictability is difficult for them. At times the hotel may be quiet, while at other times they are under pressure to cope with unexpected demand. They have their own personal commitments to meet and, while they do not compensate for the dramatic collapse in business, we are grateful for government supports and use them to secure as many jobs as possible.
Our staff’s loyalty and commitment to looking after our guests has been phenomenal. Many have long service. In September our much-loved receptionist, Beatrice, celebrated 40 years.
If the past 22 months of the Covid 19 pandemic has taught us anything, it is how unpredictable our lives can be and how exposed we all are to occurrences beyond our control. As we enter 2022 increased numbers and the spread of the Omicron variant of the disease has effectively closed the hospitality industry until at least 31 January. Even then business will not return at the flick of a switch. We will again need to show resilience to deal with this until some level of normality can be restored.
With most of the population now vaccinated and people starting to cautiously resume their normal lives, we are optimistic that we are emerging from the worst of the pandemic.
We would like to sincerely thank our many loyal customers who supported us during 2021, This support has been essential to our survival. Many of you have your own personal stories of loss and adversity and our thoughts and prayers are with you.
It is difficult to anticipate what the short-term future will bring. The world, and the way in which we live our lives, has changed and we are all adjusting to living with uncertainty. However, one thing we can be certain of is that, together with our team, the Loughran family will do all in our power to ensure our guests will receive our renowned professional service and genuine welcome that can only be found in a family run hotel.
Happy 2022. Stay safe and visit soon!
